Beyonce’s Father Survives Breast Cancer Diagnosis
The father of singers Beyonce and Solange, Mathew Knowles reveales that he underwent breast cancer diagnosis and advised other men to get tested for the disease to avoid complications.
The music executive who appeared on “Good Morning America” on Wednesday, discussed about his health challenges and told the host, Michael Strahan that he was diagnosed two months earlier after he and his wife saw stains of blood on his bedsheet and shirts.
“Why me?” 67-years-old Mr Matthew responded to the diagnosis.
“Of all the things I could get, why would I get this?” Matthew told Strahan. “From a man’s perspective, I’m thinking, ‘Why me?'”
Knowles revealed that he had a surgery in July and he’s doing very well. He said that sharing his story is just to encourage other men to get tested for the disease.
“I’m hoping by me coming here today, speaking out, letting folks know that you can survive this. But it has to be early detection. And I can’t overemphasize the word early,” he said.
American Cancer Society predicts that there will be about 2,670 new cases of invasive breast cancer in men in the United States this year and about 500 men will die from the disease. Black men also tend to have a worse prognosis, says the organization.
Knowles also said, “For the rest of my life, I have to be very much aware and conscious and do all of the early detection,” adding that his family has also got tested.
Since the diagnosis of cancer, Knowles said his lifestyle has changed and he’s now more concerned about living a healthier life.
“I stopped drinking. I wanted to just have a clean bill of health. … Things that used to be important, Michael, are not important to me now. I just look at the world differently.”
However, October is breast cancer awareness month.
