Just recently, the news of African singer, songwriter and performing artist,
Tiwatope Savage, better known as Tiwa Savage, who left Mavin Records for an international record deal with Universal Music Group (UMG) after seven years, broke the internet.
However, some music lovers and fans of Tiwa have expressed joy and satisfaction over her new international deal, while others hold that she might be approaching the decline stage of her musical career, just like D’banj and Wande coal who are no longer on the music top list in Nigeria, since they left Mavin either for an international deal or personal labels.
D’banj, former Co-owner of Mo’Hit Records, Now Mavin, left the record label to join American singer and rapper, Kanye West who signed him into his record label, “G.O.O.D Music” in June 2011.
The Koko Master as he’s fondly called, still made a hit with his debut song for Kanye’s label tagged, “Oliver Twist,” which happened to be his biggest song for year 2012.
Subsequently, D’banj became more globally recognized, having more international record deals including; Mercury, Sony Music Entertainment and currently, DB Records.
Wande Coal on the other hand also left Mavin in 2013 for hes own record label called, Black Diamond and still made some hits thereafter with songs like; Baby Hello, Iskaba ft. Dj Tunez, Turkey Nla and So Mi So.
“I think it’s important for artists to be 100% sure and aware of what they’re getting themselves into, especially when it comes to contracts.
Burna is 1000% correct. People took it out of context, maybe. It’s a great advice to any artist: make sure you see your lawyers and do your personal research. It took me a year to conclude this deal.
It took that long for a reason. It took a year to convince them that I don’t want this and I want that and this is the reason why. They understood. I feel blessed in the position I’m in. .
I have an amazing deal with UMG and I agree with Burna that while we’re pushing Africa to the World, we need to be careful that we don’t lose ourselves. I think that’s what he’s trying to say.” – TiwaSavage revealed recently when asked about Burnaboy’s comments on Nigerian artistes seeking for International deals.
Former “Mavin’s first lady,” Tiwa who has finally joined the train after 7 years with Don Jazzy’s Mavin, with hit songs like; Kele Kele, Eminado, All Over, Wanted, My Darling, etc, has left her huge fans and lovers with the big question;
